Mascot and Logo Approved for WAUG 2026

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the West African University Games (WAUG) has officially approved the mascot and logo for the highly anticipated event, set to take place at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, from 2 to 12 October 2026. This milestone signals a major step forward in preparations for the multi-sport competition that will bring together student-athletes from across West Africa.

The newly approved mascot is a vibrant representation of West African culture, with particular emphasis on the rich Yoruba heritage of the host city, Ile-Ife. It prominently features the Olokun head, a powerful symbol of wealth, prosperity, and the sea in Yoruba mythology. The mascot is also adorned with the Opele on its back, a divination tool used in traditional Yoruba spiritual practices, and cowries, which historically served as currency and symbols of prestige.

This intricate design is more than decorative. It is a statement of cultural identity and a bridge between tradition and the modern sporting world.

For WAUG, the mascot represents unity and shared heritage among West African universities. For Obafemi Awolowo University, the host institution, it is a proud declaration of deep roots in Yoruba culture. The mascot embodies wisdom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Yoruba people, promising to become a memorable icon for the Games.

Complementing the mascot is the new WAUG logo, lauded for its unique yet simple design. The LOC also announced that two individuals emerged as winners for the design of the mascot, logo, and medal respectively.

Athletes from Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo are expected to compete. Over the course of the event, participants are expected to vie for honours across a variety of sporting disciplines, potentially including basketball, football, athletics, swimming, and more.

With the mascot and logo now in place, the stage is set for a memorable and culturally significant West African University Games at Obafemi Awolowo University.
